Gastrointestinal Disorders

The spleen and stomach are the main organs involved in gastrointestinal health. The spleen is responsible for assisting the stomach digestion by absorbing nutrients from food, separating the usable from unusable parts of food, and finally extracting Qi (“chee”). Spleen Qi ascends to the lungs and heart where the nutrients are circulated throughout the body, while stomach Qi descends and facilitates the digestion process. This coordination between the stomach Qi and spleen Qi complete the digestion process. Stagnation or disfunction of the stomach or spleen Qi may manifest as a gastrointestinal disorder.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) use a holistic, whole-body approach to health. In contrast to seeking relief from medications, acupuncture and TCM use natural and safe methods to target the underlying cause(s) specific to the issue you are facing. There are several factors that contribute to and play a key role in the root cause(s) of each specific disorder. Eliza Mellen-Smith Acupuncture performs a comprehensive physical exam using both western and eastern diagnostic criteria to determine how and why your body’s Qi is out of balance. This determination allows Eliza to create a specific treatment plan that is unique to the individual. In addition to acupuncture treatments, Eliza may suggest herbal remedies and supplements designed to boost your health and immune system.
